I Am Super-Cool Now!
I am making this post from my brand-spanking new IPad! I feel like a real member of the technology age now!

I went in looking to buy a Surface (which are uber-cool looking) but the Surface does not have a data plan option. Neither did the bigger screen Ultrabook whatever-the-hell it was that I really wanted but couldn't afford. We have wireless at home, so for now it wouldn't matter, but one of the reasons I got this was in case of extended hospital stays, since my laptop is about 12 years old and takes twenty minutes to start up these days. So the ability to data-plan (yes, I used that as a verb!) in the future when needed was very important. The keyboard on this thing is pretty sweet and easy to use, much better than my laptop's was - (I feel like I am being mean to Pippin's Bitch - that was her name, many years before we got a cat named Pippin - she was loyal and served me well but it's time for her to let go now). It did take me forfuckingever to figure out how to zoom in on this thing's screen - you have to do a pinching thing that is obnoxious - but it's all good now. I need to download some sort of typing document app so I can write on this too but omg, no more being too tired to sit up at the computer and just having to lay in bed with story ideas floating around and no energy to sit up long enough to get them out. I imagine there will be lots of typos on a document I type while laying down but still...words will get out of my head! I can also read fanfic in bed now, you guys!!

Not that I plan on just staying in my pajamas and never getting out of bed again, but I could if I wanted to!

I have been saving for this for about a year and a half and I now have roughly $80 left to my name, but I think it is SO going to be worth it.

In other news, today is my grandpa's 93rd birthday! My grandpa will always be my hero - did you know that he was an insurance salesman who one day just decided he couldn't handle the stress of the job and up and bought a farm and turned his whole family into farmers, like, out of the blue? We went for a visit and my cousin had brought him some carrot cake, which I enjoyed a piece of. So, Happy Birthday, Grandpa!

Yay for iPad, they look wonderful.

My mother has one and a lot of my students. I have a MacBook and iPhone so haven't seen the need to get one yet. I know there are a lot of writing apps out there, so you should have an easy time finding the right one for you.

Also you can download fic onto it and read it there as well. Data plans are wonderful, my family recently upgraded to one with all of our devices and its great. Once I've paid off more of my student loans, I'll put my phone on my own plan but for now its easier to stay with them.

Yeah, I told J that she is welcome to use it anytime but she was all, "Thanks but I have my IPhone. I'll never need anything else." (she does kind of have an odd attachment to her phone!) I thought about getting a laptop but I am glad I didn't because the IPad is small enough that I can acually fold it up and carry it around myself - even though laptops can be lightweight, they can also be kind of awkward to carry.

Yeah, the guy at the store said whenever we want to activate it, all we have to do is call up AT&T and tell them to turn it on using my sister's plan and it will charge to that. So I don't have to pay for it all the time but if I am going on vacation or end up in the hospital, turning it on will be easy.

My dad stil pays for my cellphone plan. It's nice to have parents who don't mind helping out their kids. We'll all repay it someday when we pay for their nursing homes. ;)

Congrats on the iPad :-) The only time I've done extensive writing on mine has been with a wireless keyboard, but I'm sure I could manage if I didn't have one. There's soooo many apps out there, a search of "best free apps" can probably hook you up with so, so very much more than you need :-)

That's wonderful about your grandpa :-) Hope he enjoyed his day!

Thanks!

I actually bought one of the IPad keyboards that attaches to the IPad case. It's a wireless keyboard that connects with a bluetooth setup. But it all folds up together so it doesn't make for any extra parts for me to carry around. I haven't even tried the onscreen keyboard yet. The wireless one is so much eaiser to use than my laptop keyboard was - idk if that's because my laptop keyboard was old and used or just because the keys on this aren't as sensitive, but I like it.

I have the App Store icon and I have already started browsing their 'free' section for games. I also think I'll get a Livejournal icon and the TVGuide icon (so much easier to look up what's on from my IPad than to have to go stand in front of the TV so I can read what the TVGuide Channel says.)

That's wonderful about your grandpa :-) Hope he enjoyed his day!

Thanks! I think he was happy to have gotten a few extra visitors over the weekend, and he was happy with all the cards he got. I think maybe he didn't always remember it was his birthday until he got reminded, but that's okay.

I very much like an iPad for reading, but the keypad is hard for me to use, since I'm a touch typist and it all feels the same! Ah, well. Mine comes from work anyway, so I don't do ANYTHING fannish on it at ALL. EVER.

I finally finished my Hobbit review... but I think you won't like it. Or at least, won't agree with parts of it.

Happy Birthday to your Grandpa! (He's only 10 years older than my dad, but those ten years are a BIG DEAL!)

Oh no, I got one of the wireless keyboard attachments. It came with a case and it all snaps in together and is easy to carry around. I like it because it's just like a regular keyboard only slightly smaller, but because it folds right up into the IPad case, it doesn't make for any extra parts to carry around.

Smart thinking!

Oh, I read it last night in bed and I have things to say! (are you surprised?) But actually I don't disagree with you all that much.

Happy Birthday to your Grandpa! (He's only 10 years older than my dad, but those ten years are a BIG DEAL!)

Thanks! Yeah, the difference between 83 and 93 is a LOT. I think he was happy for all the visitors though.

Happy Birthday, Grandpa!

Congratulations on your new baby. I've never even touched a tablet! They look like fun.

Happy Birthday, Grandpa!

Thanks! I think he had a pretty nice day, with a few visitors and a bunch of cards, even if he kept forgetting it was his birthday. :)

Congratulations on your new baby. I've never even touched a tablet! They look like fun.

I actually had been thinking about getting one, so I kept asking friends if I could try whatever they had (IPad & a Kindle), just to get a feel for it. I don't think I'll use it for as many things as a more tech-savvy person might, but I can already tell it is going to be useful for the things I need. The other night while watching a TV show in the living room, we were all going, "Who is that actress?" and for once I was the person who was able to look up the answer! lol

Congrats! I've been debating whether to get a tablet or a new (faster) netbook and still am undecided, though at this point I have an iPhone and an iPod touch so I might as well go with the iPad, too, huh? At the airport last month there was a demonstration booth set up for the Surface, and I did try it out. I thought it was pretty snazzy, but if I was going to get something that had the windows operating system on it, I'd want it to run 3rd party apps. I was told the next version would have that capability, but then I looked up what the price will be and it is almost twice the cost of an iPad! So, no. I can get a new netbook that will run everything I want for about $300.
The definite advantage of a tablet, though, is that they turn on and off so quickly. Hmm.... still can't decide.

Thanks! You know, I actually saw a netbook that I really wanted but it was just out of my price range. I was disappointed at the time but now I am glad I went with the IPad. It is just enough smaller that it isn't awkward or cumbersome to carry around and that is a big selling point for me.

The Surface was really cool looking and it did everything SO fast and was a little easier to respond to my touch than the IPad. But I felt like a lot of the salesman's answers to my questions, like you said, were, "No, the Surface doesn't do that yet. Probably the next model."

I'll tell you, with the keyboard and the case, I spent $775 on the IPad and that was the lowest memory available but the newest model. I could have gone cheaper with a netbook but like I said, after the fact I am glad I didn't.

The definite advantage of a tablet, though, is that they turn on and off so quickly.

So quickly, it's ridiculous. But my old laptop took twenty minutes to start up, so anything would seem fast to me now. lol

congrats and have fun with the new toy.

nothing wrong with staying in bed in your pj's forever, lol.

what a brave man to start over like that, yay for him and your family. happy birthday to him.

Your icon always makes me smile.

congrats and have fun with the new toy.

Thanks! I already watched a movie on it actually, which was pretty sweet!

LOL. I think my sister would object when I started stinking up the joint though. ;)

what a brave man to start over like that, yay for him and your family. happy birthday to him.

Thanks! I think he had a pretty nice little day. You know, I think people who lived through the Great Depression and WWII somehow have this kind of courage to just up and leave everything behind, start over, take more risks, than people in this comfortable day and age have.

Happy birthday to your Grandpa, I hope he had a wonderful day, he sounds super cool.

And yay for the Ipad, my friend got one recently and she loves it, there is so much you can do on them, she was thinking of getting a Kindle, but the Ipad could do all the things she wanted from a Kindle and more

Yep, that was my assesment too. I tried an Ipad and a Kindle ahead of time and I could tell immediately that the IPad was what I wanted. But then they came out with this little ultrabook netbook thing that was smaller than an average laptop and the Surface tablet and then all of a sudden I had to make a decision all over again! It is very cool though and I have already taken it to bed with me. A man? Pfft, who needs one...I have an IPad!

hehe yep my kindle comes to bed with me most nights, there is so much great stuff to read, a man would just get in the way really :D
