Buuuuurn!
I didn't post my story this weekend because I got sunburned, like bad. It happened on Saturday, which other than the sunburn and the exhausting day, was actually quite nice. The Nephew needed a ride to baseball practice and then we stayed for his game and afterwards he 'took' my sister to see How To Train Your Dragon 2 for her birthday. (meaning, she drove and I paid). The BFF came with us and it was five hours of fun time with The Nephew. When he was about 4, my sister had him at Target and he picked up HTTYD and told us that movie was really good. Now at that age it was kind of a crapshoot with him on whether a movie he calls 'good' would be too cheesy for us to watch. So for a long time it was a big source of pride with him that we loved HTTYD so much and that we watched it multiple times. So when he found out the sequel was coming out the weekend of my sister's birthday, he was all, "That's what we should do for her birthday!" So we did.

But yeah, I got burned pretty bad at the ballgame. About an hour in, I noticed my sister's back (she was in a tanktop) was getting really red and especially since she has a sun allergy, we got out the lotion. She offered me some, but I was like, "Oh no. You know, I always gotta burn once and then I'm good. Let's just get it over with." One and done. Except, I forgot a medicine I am on makes me sensitive to the sun. So my face got burned, (awkward sunglass line around my eyes too). I was wearing a v-neck shirt, so my chest got a little. My right arm got burned pretty bad, with the shocking abrupt stop to the line where my sleeve cut it off. And then my left arm got scorched up like awful.

So when I got home, I put an ice pack on it and then later rubbed Aloe Vera all in. The next day, I woke up and my whole left arm and hand were way, way swollen. Like I had creepy claw hand and I couldn't move at all without feeling like my skin was going to crack open and fall off. But I could still move my wrist and wiggle my fingers, so I didn't go to urgent care. Instead I called my brother, with his reputation for holistic healing ideas, and asked his advice. He basically said that everything I had done the day before was the worst thing I could have done. Cool water is good, but ice or really cold water is too much of a shock to the burn. And rubbing the Aloe Vera into the skin is bad because then it gets down in the second layer and blocks the heat from escaping. You are suppose to just coat your top layer of skin with it, not rub it in like lotion. So then I was 24 hours out (the time frame for actually being able to do anything to help it) and my hand was all swollen and I was still radiating heat. Not good.

I did cool water soaking all day yesterday and got some cool-down spray that my brother recommended, (his wife uses it cuz she burns bad). I also turned the fan on last night and slept with my arm outside the covers and kept a spray bottle of water next to my bed to keep moistening the skin throughout the night. And I've been drinking lots of water and Gatorade and taking Ibuprofen. The swelling has gone down about halfway and I am actually able to type this out without screaming pain, so that's good, but I am still radiating heat like woah. Yeah, I screwed up good. Sun lotion from now on!

Ooooh, poor baby! I got sun poisoning once when I visited friends in Hawaii, when I was walking around all day wearing sandals and no sunscreen on my feet, and my ankles got so swollen and hot that I couldn't walk for a few days. We really underestimate that bright thing up in the sky! I hope your burn begins to cool and ease very soon.

The sunburn has been no fun at all! Yeah, I def think I got sun poisoning. I even had some chills the first night, which is why I have been so diligent about staying hydrated this week.

See, that's interesting because I have had two other nasty burns in my life and I never swelled from them. I was freaked out when my hand swelled up because I'd never heard of a sunburn causing that before. Good to know it wasn't just me and my weird body's response - though omg, in your feet? That has to be the worst place you could possibly get burned. It was actually so nice out where we were and I love taking my shoes off outside, that I almost slipped off my socks and shoes that day. So glad I didn't now, after heairng your story!

The swelling is all gone now, thank goodness. I am still radiating some heat, but less than I was. I can definitely see it is improving but I think I've got quite a ways to go befiore it even starts to think about peeling and settling. <3s

*hugs gently* Sunburn is awful, keep cool and I hope it heals soon.

Thanks, darling! The swelling in the sunburn has gone all the way down now, so that's a plus! I am still radiating some heat and if I don't keep it moist or sprayed up with the after care spray, it gets super dried out and the coloring is still freaky to look at...but I can def see it is improving! I am still taking lots of precautions on staying hydrated though because I don't think I am past the point where it is drying me out as well. I expect t be hurting at least for the next week.

OWWWWWW. OWWWWW. I hope you heal soon.

lol Thanks, babe! The sunburn is very slowly healing. The swelling has gone down all the way but it is still radiating heat and very oddly colored - like it's in that weird stage where it is staring to set into a tan but is still kind of red, so it comes off looking purple, idek. Mostly the issue at the moment is that my skin is so dry. I have to really stay on that. But so much better than it was. I was so freaked out by the swelling, you know! ;)

Hope you soon feel better.

Thank you very much! The swelling from the sunburn has certainly gone down now and mostly at the moment it is the extremely super insane dry skin that is my issue. I am trying to keep it moisturized and hoping the heat stops soon. But certainly better. I really did think I would end up at urgent care, but I have not!

Actually Aloe is good to rub in, no such thing as "blocking the heat", water on the other hand to "moisturize" IS a bad thing because while water cools you off for a few seconds in dries out your skin really badly too (aloe doesn't have that effect).

If you want cooling AND healing then mix aloe with some cucumber and white yogurt (or cream) and coat your burned skin with it (let it work for and hour or so then gently wash it off, repeat coating if needed afterwards).

Actually Aloe is good to rub in, no such thing as "blocking the heat",

I looked it up after talking with my brother (he does get some weird ideas sometimes) and then seeing your comment and you are right that there is no mention anywhere of 'blocking the heat'. I couldn't find that reasoning anywhere on the internet. However, several places did say that rubbing it in is less effective - not 'bad' for it, just less effective. Like it moisturizers better if you just leave the aloe on the top layer. Idk, but I have the spray kind of stuff now, so I just spray my skin down and am done with it. (it's this after burn care moisturizing spray that is wonderful!)

water on the other hand to "moisturize" IS a bad thing because while water cools you off for a few seconds in dries out your skin really badly too

I checked around and every place I found with sunburn advice said the same thing my brother did - that a cool compress (not a 'cold' one) was good for the burn. Most places were talking about within the first 24 hours because you aren't suppose to get burned as bad as I did where you are still radiating heat after the first day. But they all did recommend cold compresses. For me, I am not working, so I have the luxury of putting a wet cloth on for 15 minutes every hour and keeping myself moist that way. Idk how it would work for someone who has to be at the office for 8 hours.

If you want cooling AND healing then mix aloe with some cucumber and white yogurt (or cream) and coat your burned skin with it (let it work for and hour or so then gently wash it off, repeat coating if needed afterwards).

I've actually been wondering how yogurt would work - just because it is moist and thick and cool and once I got it in my head, I kept thinking how great it would feel on my skin. Why the cucumber?

At the moment the swelling has gone down (thank goodness) and the heat has lessened (not gone though) but I can see the coloring starting to turn (like it is thinking about going tan at some point) and mostly I am just trying to stay on the moisturizing and get through it. So much better than it was though!

Thanks for the advice, babe! I'm gonna see if we have any yogurt!

Yeah, you can't "block heat", you can only block sweat but by sunburn your "natural cooling system" gets fucked up, you don't sweat when you should (in most really bad cases) and no sweat means no natural cooling of overheated skin.

Water is really good and HAS to be used immediately on any burn, sunburn included but preferably only cool water (and compresses), not ice cold water or your body will get into shock (that's why you shouldn't drink ice cold beverages during hot days, they cool your mouth cavity but do nothing for your body - except hydrating of course - and could cause you tummy ache or even shock if you are sensitive to temperature changes. A hot beverage on a hot day on the other hand will actually lower your body temperature a grade or so, it's one of the reasons why people who live in countries with regular high temperatures prefer spicy hot foods, it makes them sweat and that leads to their body being cooled down), but in the long run when the immediate pain and burn fade it's better to switch to something else (your spray is a perfect solution, we have one too, it's really nifty).

The cucumber hydrates, yogurt (or cream, curd too) helps the skin "renew", helps to minimize scarring and soothes it (I know from experience, it's a well known home remedy by sunburns here, once got my back extremely sunburned, couldn't sleep and ended up crying so my dad got some cream from the fridge and put it on my back and shoulders - I finally fell asleep).

Yay for birthday movie going and being well enough to go after the terrible health year you've been having. I've not seen it, but it has dragon's so that's a plus in my books already.

Ouch. Sunburn sucks so bad and it sounds like you really got hit bad with it. *very careful hugs* Sounds like you're doing all you can for it,taking care of it, which is good.

I hope it feels better soon. Also sunglasses/glasses and the sun always lead to an interesting looking face right?

I was worried that the day would be too much for me and I certainly paid for it the next day, but it was well worth using my spoons on! I had such a good time with my favorite people. How To Train Your Dragon is such a fun movie. It is funny and sweet and cute and exciting and the animation on it is astounding (even better in the second movie). I highly recommend it. It's one of those family movies that adults really can enjoy too!

Especially on the left side, it got so messed up, I was so freaked out. Shit, I leaned my lesson though - Sunscreen for always! The swelling has gone down now, but the skin is really dried out so I am staying on top of it the best I can. Pippin is happy though because he can use my am as a pillow again (his favorite) without making his Lady cry. ;)

I hope it feels better soon. Also sunglasses/glasses and the sun always lead to an interesting looking face right?

It looks so weird, plus I had my hair pinned back on one side, so aside from the raccoon face I also have one really red spot on one side of my forehead where my hair was pinned back. My face is going to look so weird when that one spot tans! 8)

I will have to check out How to train your dragon, I've not seen the first one, but I trust your recs and like I said dragons are cool. Some times it's worth using all your spoons for something like that, but I know the suffering the next day feeling. It sucks. People tell me it's finding the balance, but I'm not good at that, I'm not ever sure how much is too much.

Aww I'm glad Pippin can have his cuddle spot back and glad your feeling better. I hope your doing even better now. Lots of sunscreen from now on and I'll be learning from you and keeping it on me at all times this summer. I'm pretty pale, I don't know about you, but I'm not good at tanning.

OMG once I was wearing my glasses on the beach and the sun shone through the lenses. I just had one rectangle of burn on my cheek. My mum still giggles if it gets brought up, it looked so stupid.

I rambled in your Tumblr inbox today to about kidneys and superheros, because you know I'm normal like that. I only got to go through some of your tumblr posts, but you've been posting some great stuff. Made me miss leverage and need a LOTR's re-watch.

Sunburn is BAD. Next time, take the sunscreen, you big goober!

Except for that, it sounds like you had a pretty good weekend. :)

I know, I know! I just don't think in terms of '2 hours outside' because I never do that except in the evening and under the porch roof. I wasn't thinking about the lack of shade and the time length and the medicine effect. My new motto is that it's like when someone asks if you're a god, you say yes. If someone asks if you want sunscreen, you say yes!

Except for that, it sounds like you had a pretty good weekend. :)

I had a fantastic weekend! Saturday ball game and movie with my Sis, Bff and Nephew - like my very favorite people in the whole world! It was excellent. Oh, and then we stopped and got coneys at the Frosty King from my childhood where I love, love their coneys! How was your weekend?

it's like when someone asks if you're a god, you say yes. If someone asks if you want sunscreen, you say yes! This strikes me as an excellent philosophy!

Oh, yeah, our weekend was great! It ran from Saturday through Tuesday this week: TAH(tm) was off of work all of those days, and we had a great night with a local friend Saturday, with the "pool" and movies in the backyard. Then, Sunday to Tuesday, we had out of town friends here. We ate barbeque and bar-hopped, had awesome home-cooked food from TAH(tm), and MORE movies and pool time in the backyard. It was a super time!

What I took away from all this was that the TAH(tm) is even awesomer than previously thought because he can also cook! Damn, woman, where do you find this man?! (Oh right, at a Ren Fair!)
