My Family, The Geeks.
So I had a really good weekend, though I am exhausted now. Friday The BFF and I watched some of The Flash. (The Flash/Arrow crossover ep, omg, squee & flail!). The Nephew came on Saturday and went to my mom’s to watch Brave. (We watched Frozen with her last week and I really liked them both, but I think I liked Frozen better. I’m a musical sucker). And then on Sunday we went to my mom’s side of the family’s gathering and then we took The Nephew home and then there was glorious sleep.

So, at the family thing, we played this game called Pass The Popcorn - (I highly rec it if you are a movie geek like my family is). For some reason Guy Cousin has this hate-boner for Russell Crowe. (Glad my little brother wasn’t there because he has a weird love affair with Russell Crowe and they would have had to throw down). Every time a Russell Crowe movie came up - which happened a lot since he is in a lot of movies - Guy Cousin would be all, “Who does Russell Crowe think he is?” and other ludicrous remarks. At one point - and I can’t even remember what the clue or movie was now - a thing came up for a 1999 movie and GC shouts, “Les Miserable!” and I busted out laughing. He goes, “Idk. Idk anything about that movie. I‘ve never seen it.” And I said, “You know why you’ve never seen that movie? Because it has Russell Crowe in it.” He goes, “Fuck that guy!” and my sister adds, “Plus, that movie came out like two years ago, not in 1999.” GC continues to curse Russell Crowe and drink his beer. We leave and two hours after - once we’d dropped off The Nephew - we return home to find a message on our answering machine from a drunken Guy Cousin that just says, “Hey! There’s a Les Miserable movie that came out in 1998! So suck it!” and then he hangs up. Yep, that’s how my family rolls. (I did know that actually because my little brother bought me that movie on VHS years ago. It had Liam Neeson in it and was based on the book, not the musical.)

Also, in the car, we listened to a CD that my sister made for The Nephew last year of Middle-Earth songs. It has all the Hobbit and LotR credit themes, The Shire score, The Misty Mountain score and some funny jokey songs. Apparently The Nephew listens to it a lot because he was singing along. First my sister and I were singing along to “Waiting For Frodo,” and I could hear him in the backseat singing too. Then Flight of The Conchords’, “Frodo, Don’t Wear The Ring,” came on and he declares, “I like this one!” and sings all the words, even most of the rappy bits. (Can’t wait to show him the music video next weekend!). Then we get to Neil Finn’s “Song Of The Lonely Mountain” and he says that this one is his favorite and then proceeds to sing along. He even does the chanting bits. I was really, really exhausted at the time, which does make one overly emotional, but I will not even front…I straight up got choked up and my eyes all filled with tears. Here is my little man, sitting in the backseat, singing along wholeheartedly with so much feeling and geekery and just…I love that little guy so fucking much. Fan-Kids are the best thing this world has to offer!

So, that was my weekend. Now I have a bunch of Christmas stuff to get done before Saturday, when we have my dad’s side of the family and then The Nephew coming home with us afterwards for four days! How about you guys…what Christmas stuff do you have going on?

Aww, I love how geeky your nephew is and weirdly Russell Crowe seems to either inspire love or hate. I happen to like him though he's made some odd movies over the years.

At the moment, I'm spending my time writing my Yuletide, preparing to send out Christmas cards and my family's slowly putting holiday stuff out. We're doing Christmas with the family in New Jersey this Saturday since they're spending Christmas proper with her parents.

Life is pretty good.

It's the cutest thing! We are taking him to The Hobbit on Sunday. I have demanded he wear his Bilbo costume and I plan on surprising him by dressing up as a dwarf!

and weirdly Russell Crowe seems to either inspire love or hate.

It's weird, because I never really cared for Russell Crowe, but I enjoyed him in Les Mis and I loved him in Yuma, so idk. I think I hate him, but then I don't. lol

That all sounds really nice. <3 I like a slow build to Christmas like that! It really helps keep the holiday spirit going for awhile, I think.

Life is pretty good.

I am so glad to hear it! It's been stressful here with my mom, but I've still been in a good mood lately, writing a lot and doing a lot of art. Maybe it's just my muses keeping me happy!

Your nephew is a treasure.

He really is! <3 I can't wait until his baby sister is old enough for him to start teaching her the ways of the geek!

I kinda liked Russell Crowe in Gladiator. And he didn't RUIN Les Mis or anything, but I can't think of anything else that I've truly enjoyed him in. So yeah, fuck that guy! :P

The Nephew is so great! My brother's kids are all avid readers who adore fantasy and science fiction - I'm sure it's very confusing to him, but I just assume they inherited it from me. :D

Our Xmas plans here at home are little ones - TAHtm works the three days before Xmas and Xmas day. (Maybe I'll manage to write a lot, who knows?) We are traveling for about nine days after that.

LOL I tend to be of the Fuck That Guy vein with Crowe as well, except that I liked him in Les Mis and I loved him in 3:10 To Yuma, so then I get confused. Do I like him or not?! lol I did not care for him in Gladiator. Everyone was all gushing about him, this new guy on the scene and all, but I was like, "Fuck that guy, I want the King/Prince/whatever he is, to win this shit. Kill everyone and marry his sister! That guy's a hottie. So deliciously evil!" And my sister says, "That's Leif Phoenix, you idiot," and I was like, "Well, my childhood crush still lives then!" ;)

My nephew is the best! Thankfully my brother was a comic nerd as well so The Nephew at least gets some of that at home. Not the fantasy stuff though - my brother likes books on war and history.

We are traveling for about nine days after that.

Oh, I hate having to travel all over for the holidays. I always want to stay home in my pjs and enjoy the day with my sister and no one else! It never works out that way though. lol Hopefully it is good traveling for you!

edited to change my icon! lol

I always liked River better. Indiana Jones, you know....

Thanks - hopefully the weather will cooperate with us!

Oh, I liked River best too, at first.. I was going to marry him, I was. He was too old for me to be crushing on but considering a good half of my crushes I had at age 11 were on grown men, it didn't seem like a big deal to me. I was devastated when he died, cried in my room for days.

But at the same time, I had seen Space Camp and was crushing on Joaquin and then Parenthood came along, where he played the so-called 'troubled boy' or 'bad boy' and I was in love.

I probably would have married River if he'd lived, but as it stood I am quite happy to marry Joaquin! ;)

My first encounter with Joaquim was Gladiator. I thought he was pretty weak sauce as evil went - but a fantastic spoiled brat!

Joaquin is weaksauce in nothing!! You shut your face, whore!

I mean, what?

Shut up.

Your nephew is clearly the cutest most awesome kid ever, but don't tell any of my cousins I said that, they all have kids I'm meant to like best, but none of them are awesome geeky fanboys. He totally wins for his love of LOTR
One of the girl cuz's has a new baby. I bought her a little baby reindeer onsie, they posted a pic of her in it the other day and thanked me, apparently she's all snuggly in it. It was pretty damn cute, but that's not as awesome lol.

I know your going to be all busy, and I may forget, so saying it now in case we don't get to chat. Merry Christmas!! I hope you have an amazing time. your Christmas with the BFF and sis sounds awesome.

I'm doing one meal with friends, then a quiet family Christmas. It should be good. Hopefully I shake off the germs I've woken up with, cos' right now it hurts to breath.

So of course instead of resting I've taken my mum for an MRI, done the food shop, and edited and submitted a nolella for possible publication *fingers crossed*

I hope you are well hun *big hugs*

Seriously, I don't think there are better things in this world than listening to a geekboy singing along to the Hobbit theme song!

Ah, but see, she is still a blank canvas for which you can write on! It's a lot of work though, molding them up that way.

I know your going to be all busy, and I may forget, so saying it now in case we don't get to chat. Merry Christmas!!

Merry Christmas to you too! And your family! I will be busy, what with The Nephew being here and all. (it looks now like we may have a snowstorm for Christmas and he will be here for a few days right before and I know it's wrong, cuz his parents want him home for the holiday, but I kinda hope he gets snowed in here and can't make it home and is here for Christmas morning! I'm a greedy aunt!)

I hope you have an amazing time. your Christmas with the BFF and sis sounds awesome.

Tomorrow night! We are getting Chinese food special and have peppermint candy cane brownies for dessert!

I'm doing one meal with friends, then a quiet family Christmas.

Those actually sound nice. I have a lot of extended family things to do this year, too many imo, but I would love for a nice quiet family meal.

Now you get to feeling better so you can enjoy the holidays! (why do we always fall sick right before the big day? idek, but it always happens, doesn't it?)

I bet he was super cute!

I'm not that close to new babies mum, so I won't be around much to be an awesome influence lol

I hope you and your whole family have a great time, and I'll have my fingers crossed that you get to keep the nephew for Christmas.

Ohh peppermint candy brownies sound so good!!

Don't over do it with the family stuff, you don't want to end up really sick.

I'm doing better, eating well now, which rocks, because holiday food. But yeah I swear it's like our bodies know it's a holiday and get sick on purpose.

I had a good friend meal, not everyone could make it, but we had a good time, but the day after is hard. I sent you a whiny message about high heels on tumblr lol

Have a great holiday!

Hugs

So I have heard excellent things about The Flash and have saved all the episodes and really want to watch them. But I have been busy enough in the evenings that I can't watch anything I really need/want to pay attention to. So they have been mouldering away on my computer.

Then I get to ep 8 of Arrow and realize I need to watch The Flash so I can see the crossover ep before I can watch more of Arrow. AAAHHHHHHH!! I need way more hours in each day.

That was an absolutely charming story about your nephew and the LOTR songs. He sounds like a doll.

This time next week I will be in Seattle for my nine-day visit, which I hope will be mostly relaxing. I would really like to veg and read for a while. My Kindle is loaded with fiction, nonfiction and fan fiction. I wonder what I'll be reading most? ;-)

dodger_sister: batman and robindodger_sister on December 18th, 2014 11:09 pm (UTC)
(I don't seem to have any Arrow or Flash icons, so have this Batman and Robin icon instead! It's DC at least!)

Then I get to ep 8 of Arrow and realize I need to watch The Flash so I can see the crossover ep before I can watch more of Arrow.

IDK how much that is true. I mean, you know Barry from the stuff of Arrow he was on last year, right? So, maybe not. Like we are four eps behind on Arrow, but we still managed to watch The Flash's section of the crossover episode without any problems. It seemed to really wrap up at the end of the ep too, so maybe less a two-parter and more two one-parters? You might be good to keep going with Arrow - though you should check out The Flash at some point. It's a shiny, happier, more adorable show than Arrow, but I like that. I like that it is more easy-going and fun. I believe Stephen Amell said something along the lines of Oliver looking at Barry like a little brother, like who is this dickhead zipping around me with that stupid grin...which kind of sums up the show. Barry is SO happy to have his powers and be able to help people. So I like it, but it's nowhere near the awesome levels of Arrow.

That was an absolutely charming story about your nephew and the LOTR songs. He sounds like a doll.

He really is! I recently referred to him as a geek and he got offended and I was like, "Naw, embrace it. I'm a geek, Aunt *Baylor's* a geek, your dad's a nerd, and you, son, are a geek."

This time next week I will be in Seattle for my nine-day visit, which I hope will be mostly relaxing.

Friends or family? Cuz friends always tend to be more relaxing than family visits! Enjoy your fanfiction reading! Merry Christmas, babe!
