Spreading Out.
It has taken me two years since The BFF initially suggested it to me, but I have finally gotten an AO3 account. I was hesitant because I have issues with being too spread out in my fandom life, having my fic in more than one place. It's a control issue. I know I didn't have it back in my early days of fandom, when everything was on Yahoo groups and this archive and that website, etc. My fics were spread out everywhere back then. In those days though, I was on the drugs and that made my control issues less of a deal than they are now. Since then, like I was looking for good Firefly fic to read that hit the sweet spot I wanted, and the place I was searching recommended my own story to me! I didn't even remember ever having put anything in that archive! So after letting the suggestion sit for two years - omg - I finally did it. I am just slowly loading my fic on there, a few a week. So far I just have three fics up - a Misha/Mike-Jared/Jensen fic, a Puckerman-centric Glee fic & a Jon Stewart/Stephen Colbert fic. I will be uploading in the order that I posted to LJ, until I get all caught up.

I also started a side tumblr, as a place to vent about a lot of the day to day of the disability. I mean, I vent about the big stuff here and also updates on my health, but I wanted a place to just randomly complain about the little things. Like, why do people think my wheelchair is a coat rack? Or why do businesses put their handicap parking spots way down away from the building? Sure, the ramp is down there for wheelchair people, but wheelchairs aren't the only kind of disability. What about those of us who struggle with walking farther than we have too? Things like that and reblogs and submissions of the same kind. And helpful things like adaptive equipment and stuff. Tumblr is the first place I ever heard the words 'ableists' and ableism', so I figured it was a good place to reach others who would like a blog like this and maybe benefit from it. At least we can be 'like'-ing things in solidarity.

Anyways, here is where I am now on the Internets...
My Livejournal - Dodger_Sister.
My Fandom Tumblr - Dodger-Sister.
My Disabilities Tumblr - Disableism.
My AO3 Account - Dodger_Sister.

Friend me/Follow me wherever you like!

It will be nice to have a place where all of my fic can be at one time and seen by all the people, that's for sure. Plus, AO3 is likely to outlive LJ by a long, long while I feel. Someday LJ will just be gone, but as long as there are fangirls, there will be an AO3.

Caughtinblackseyes! Got it! I will keep my eye out! Thank you!

Cool! I already have 5 subscribers following me! That's pretty awesome. :)

I only go to AO3 to read - and that only rarely. I can't handle posting to more than DW and LJ, and probably wouldn't even have a DW account if not for the ways that LJ sometimes fucks things up. :D

So much stuff is only on AO3 these days - especially in certain fandoms of mine, like Teen Wolf & Justified, that I am reading over there more and more (when I actually get a chance to read anything). Also there are some fandoms that I have written in that you can't even find a crosspost community here on LJ - like Falling Skies. I want to put that fic up and have people actually see it!

I can't handle posting to more than DW and LJ,

That was never my problem with it - it was just having too many places for my things, losing control of my stuff and where it is. I will NEVER post a fic on Tumblr because once it's out there, you have absolutely NO control over what happens to it and I am SO not down with that. But after learning how to do shit over on AO3, I feel better about it - less anxious about the control aspect of it. It's easy to post too. I figure if I spend 15 minutes crossposting and tagging to LJ communities, I can spend 5 extra minutes putting it up on AO3.

probably wouldn't even have a DW account if not for the ways that LJ sometimes fucks things up. :D

I know I should get a DW account, just because I will be sad the day I go to log onto LJ and it is gone. I need a backup place for my journal, just so I don't lose everything when LJ goes down. (and I feel like it will someday). I also keep thinking I need to use that PDF program and turn my entire journal into a PDF, so I have it saved somewhere. I am lazy though. So I haven't done that yet.

I know lots is there - but I also know that they often need more money to keep going, and sometimes worry that they can't. Besides, I'd feel weird posting any of the co-authored stuff there, and I just don't have that much solo stuff. So, DW and LJ. :)

Yeah, I never want other people posting my stuff. So I'll never use Tumblr! :D

You should! And it only takes one post on DW to hit your journal there AND your journal on LJ. No extra time required!

It's EASY. Go do it! Break your journal into .pdfs by year and save them somewhere.

Yeah, if your co-author isn't on AO3, then that would not be cool to do. Fannish etiquitte!

I put my art up there a few times, but man I hold my breath when I do that, every time. Still, I just can't stand the thought of my fic being reblogged left and right until I don't even know where it is anymore.

I actually have this bizarre idea that I want to break them up into like year long pdfs, like you say, and then have The BFF - (who does a lot of anthology publishing for fic and the like) - publish them into little mini books, to preserve long after I am dead. (sounds morbid, but you know, you think about these things when you have a shorter life expectancy). Then someday The Nephew can read them and continue to get to know me, even after I am gone. Except then I think, maybe The Nephew doesn't need to know me that well. ;)

Oh, two of them are on AO3, but since they quit me so very rudely, I don't feel like putting our shared stuff up there. Like, they dumped me, so why should I spread their work any farther than I already do? (Maybe I'm childish in this.)

LJBook allows you to order books, also.

What is LJBooks? Explain.
Ironlily - Making My Marquevikingprincess on January 21st, 2015 12:16 pm (UTC)
The website ljbook.com will collate all of your journal (you can leave out comments, or images, and just have entries if you want) into a .pdf. It'll do the whole thing (not recommended by me as it takes too long and times out) or a designated span. Takes ten minutes for a half year or year, then it lets you download it for the next hour. OR, you can order an actual hold-in-your-hand soft cover book, which I assume would be of the 8x11 size. I have 13 files of my years from 2004 to last December 31.

Just in case you missed it, you can upload to AO3 directly from any fic you've posted here at LJ. You'll have to futz with the coding when it goes up, since it reads everything (including LJ tags) and stuff gets out of place on AO3. But it's a thousand times better than copy and pasting, believe me.

I saw that! The BFF actually walked me through it all. But I tried the copy and paste option first and it seems so easy to me. I already have the story page open on LJ, so I just click 'edit' and the copy and paste the fic, leaving out all the header info and whatnot that I would have to delete if it uploaded the whole fic. It takes like 10 seconds. But I haven't uploaded a fic longer than 3k so far, so maybe I'll like the upload option better for longer stories?

Also, LOL you talk about posting stuff on Tumblr and having no control over it -- when my Big Bang came out (and before I was on Tumblr), there was actually someone on Tumblr who copypasted a paragraph from it and put it up their Tumblr and it got like 300 notes or something. There were a bunch of people who responded saying where the paragraph came from, which was nice, but if people are gonna steal, they will.

The AO3 tagging system is your best friend, too. If you ignore the teenagers who use the tags like they do on Tumblr and write their friggin' feelings and shit, it's the most helpful way to find fic you're looking for. I've discovered that tagging your stuff properly helps.

It's pretty much the one and only place to find reputable fic. I'm not putting fanfiction.net down (okay, maybe I am a little) but the stuff on AO3 tends to be of a higher quality.

AO3 is the first time I've been able to see hits on my fic too, which is encouraging. Who knows how many times people have read stuff here on LJ; with AO3 I can keep track for funsies.

Ugh, omg. Why would someone do that? They're going to go around stealing single paragraphs from people's fic - what is that even?! For me I just don't like the idea that people can reblog and reblog and reblog and then if I ever want to make changes or take it down, it's too late, it's out there, you can never get it back, you know?

If you ignore the teenagers who use the tags like they do on Tumblr and write their friggin' feelings and shit,

I don't understand the people who use it like Tumblr. Like those feelings are for your note section, guys and girls. The tags are there to give you more foot-traffic from the people who want your kind of story!

It's pretty much the one and only place to find reputable fic. I'm not putting fanfiction.net down (okay, maybe I am a little) but the stuff on AO3 tends to be of a higher quality.

FF.net used to be THE place to go, but nowadays it is of less and less quality, for sure.

AO3 is the first time I've been able to see hits on my fic too, which is encouraging. Who knows how many times people have read stuff here on LJ; with AO3 I can keep track for funsies.

The hit counts bother me though because I thus far have 300 hits total and only 11 kudos. Like either my fics are not nearly as good as I thought they were because people aren't taking the .2 seconds to hit Kudos or else people are just so fucking lazy they can't take the .2 seconds to hit Kudos. The BFf says that is a normal ratio but damn, that's disconcerting.

So are you the same name on AO3 - I want to subscribe to you, even though I'll probably still read any new fics of yours on LJ.
Why all the pearls? Why all the hair? Why anything?: SPN - Cas powered uprhymephile on January 26th, 2015 08:43 pm (UTC)
I am the same name EVERYWHERE, LOL, even on the Playstation Network. Unless I accidentally subscribed somewhere before, no one will be using my name on any service. That's why it's handy.

I think you can turn hits off. I don't, but I've seen at least one popular Dean/Cas story that had no hits listed but turned up when searched by hits.

OMG, welcome to AO3! I got it just in time for my fic muses to go into hiding for more than a year, but it IS a great place to post fic. :p I like the tagging system for searching for fics to read as well. Hope you like it too! <3

Thank you, babe! I've been reading at AO3 for about a year now and I love the tagging system. It makes it so easy to find exactly what I am craving. Have you uploaded all your old stuff? That seems to be a project all of its own, lol. Are you the same name over there or something else? I want to subscribe to you - what is your handle?!
wolfrider89: Lev - OT3 cutewolfrider89 on February 22nd, 2015 08:07 pm (UTC)
I haven't uploaded my old stuff, no. That seems like a LOT of work! I have like... two SPN RPS fics, my last DC BB and two short Derek/Stiles things on there. But WHEN (not if) I finish my Parker/Eliot/Hardison fic, that will go up there.

I'm rustypeopleskillz over there, but I think you should be able to search for wolfrider89 and find me as well. They have like a whole thing where you can have aliases if you've switched handles between fandoms or something, it's awesome.

I found you and followed you! Yay AO3! I have like 12 of my earlier fics up there (or at least early LJ fics up there - I still have a backlog of LOTR fic to get up somewhere, sometime). I try to put up a few a week but I need to step it up or I'll never get everything up there! lol

Eliot/Parker/Hardison fic!!!! Eeeeeeeeeee.

I actually was wondering if there was chance you had time to beta anything for me? I'll pop you an ask on Tumblr here at some point too, in case you don't see this right away (I know you aren't around LJ much these days). I have a 8k Jensen/JDM pwp fic and a 10k Jared/Misha romance fic (I know, IDEK where that pairing came from with me, let alone 10k of it!) and they are both pretty long and took me some time to write and now I am cross-eyed over them. They could probably use a little polish at least before I do anything with them. Let me know!
