History Is Made Today!
Now this is a great day! I am so thrilled! I never thought this would happen. I never thought I would see my home-state, Michigan, have marriage equality. I never thought I would see this country have marriage equality. And now we do! I am so happy for all my friends whose state marriages will be recognized everywhere. And for myself and every lgbtqa person who can now marry freely in this country, whomever they love. (not that I ever plan to get married, unless Enrique Murciano or Chad Michael Murray come calling, which don't require a Supreme Court ruling, but still, you never know!) I love looking at the pictures of all the celebrations and the two elderly men who have been together over 50 years and are now married, the man who was one of the people involved in the case who now has the right to be on his spouse's death certificate, all of the people whose dreams got recognized today and the generations to come who will never be denied the right to love who they want. Also, Joe Biden, wearing a pride flag as a cape and running through the halls of The White House high-fiving everyone. It's a great day!

Love Wins!
More pics here!

Celebrate tonight, keep fighting tomorrow!

A great day, indeed. I really despaired of this happening in my lifetime. I have two special friends in Michigan who must be over the moon today.

I never plan to marry - (partially because I would lose my government health insurance so I can't actually afford to marry, and partially because I just don't have the energy for a relationship like that) - but it is wonderful to know that I have that option now, no matter who I fall in love with, guy or girl. Ofc, they'd have to be super mega rich to be able to pay my hospital bills when I lose my insurance, but still, their gender no longer matters! Only their back account, lol!

I have a great friend from my hometown who has moved away years back and gotten married to a lovely man and I m always bugging him, do you guys think you'd ever move back to MI and one reason he always say NO is bc their marriage wouldn't be recognized here. He no longer has that excuse! Ha!

I don't blame you. Marriage isn't for everyone and there are lots of times when I wish I were single.

Anyone without medical coverage is up the proverbial Shit Creek in this country. Unless, of course, you're desperately poor and then you get everything you need for free. There's a family like that in our town whose chronically ill son has received hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of medical care for free. Those of us considered middle income really get the shaft. You are VERY lucky to have government health insurance. Of course, it would be even nicer to be healthy. :)

That's nice about your friends being able to move back. Do you think they'll move back to MI now that their marriage will be recognized?

I used to want to get married, and sometimes I still think it'd be nice, but then I think about the amount of energy it would take to even find that person, cultivate the relationship, even get to the point of getting married and I think, "Nah, I'd rather be writing fanfiction." ;)

It prob cost about 50k just to keep me alive every year. And that's a good year, nevermind if I have a accident or extra illness. Without the government insurance, I would have died long ago. Without the government financial aid, I'd have died in the streets. Things are so much better in this country for the chronically ill than they were even 50 years ago. That said, it is easy to lose that assistance. To get married, I would have to marry someone either so poor/sick that they too were on government aid, so I could keep mine as well...or someone so rich that 100k a year to care for me is a drop in the bucket, when I lose my government insurance, as I would. Good thing I have no moral issues with long-term live-in lovers cuz if I ever did get to that stage in a relationship, a legal marriage would most likely not be financially feasible for me. And that's kind of sad because money should never be a factor in whether or not you decide to marry someone.

That's nice about your friends being able to move back. Do you think they'll move back to MI now that their marriage will be recognized?

Honestly, with the husband's work going the way it is right now, he'd probably go for it! But my friend has cultivated a really nice gig for himself in importing/exporting and unfortunately, there aren't many career opportunities for that in Michigan. So I doubt it at this point.

Yay! I'm thrilled! And you're right, the fight isn't over, but I think it'll be very hard to undo this.

I do not think this will get undone. I really don't, even with other presidents and congresses, etc coming into play. The Supreme Court has spoken! I think various states will attempt to find loopholes or make ways around it, but as we have seen in the last few weeks, if the people are armed with the right information, even those loopholes won't take. (the states where people are being turned away for reasons like 'oh we don't have that form right now'', but the word is spreading, don't let them get away with that, report it, report it, report it.).

But there are still other fights. In my home state, Michigan, it is still legal to fire someone for being gay. We don't have all the protections we should have. We still can't adopt in a lot of states (my biggest pet peeve because we have so many kids in foster care that need homes!).

But we're getting there and this was/is a HUGE victory and I am still smiling!
