Doggie!
We're getting a dog! No, not Violet the French Bulldog pup my sister still dreams of, even though it's maybe morally objectionable, but awfully cute. My mom's dog, Winston, to be exact. Winston was staying with my aunt after my mom broke her shoulder, when it looked like it would be a few weeks, but now that she has had the heart attacks and will be in rehab, surgery, recovery, etc for several months, some changes had to be made.

Winston is used to being home with someone all day, as my mom never travels farther than the library or the store. Even when she was working, she was never gone for more than 4 hours a day. My aunt is gone all day and then often takes off again in the evenings. She has an elderly foster dog, Damien, and he is low-key, in need of affection and a good home, but doesn't mind being home alone most of the day. Winston isn't like that. He's subdued since the attack, and he is 8 now, but he is still active, interested in the world around him. I've been babysitting Winston here and there since Mom went into the hospital, when my aunt is going out again in the evening and knows that Winston needs some attention. It has worked out really well so far. One night she wasn't home and it started storming - which he is terrified of - and she asked us to pick him up, so we did. He was so scared alone like that and was so happy when we got him back to our house. When we told our mom about this, she straight out asked us to take him, having no idea that Sis and I had been discussing it already and trying to figure out a way to convince her to do this and also not hurt our aunt's feelings.

We went to the store and bought him two new beds and a bunch of toys - of which he took no notice except the bone, which he proceeded to carry around the house all day and show to everyone, including the cats, like yes, Winston, we all see your bone, damn, son - and treats and new water bowl and pretty much everything a dog would need, ever. Then my sister went online and bought a cat tree and shelving for our living room to finally catify our house, so the cats don't feel their territory is infringed on. We've always wanted to do this, but getting the dog was the push we needed to finally catify the shit out of this place.

Our aunt is worried that taking Winston will be taking on too much when we already have so much on our plate with Mom as it is, but somehow having him here puts us at ease more than it adds to our plate. IDK, I am bit worried about how it will change the structure and dynamics of the household, but also excited because he is a good boy and I can really help by being here with him all day and yeah, it's not the dog we would have picked for ourselves, but he's a lovable happy affectionate dog and Mom is so happy he will be here and I can send her pictures and videos all the time and they can Facetime together through our Ipads and IDK, it'll just be nice to have him. He's a good boy.

Winston continues to be a lucky, lucky doggie, and your decision is so loving. I know you'll all get along wonderfully.

The cats are taking to him quite well, though I feel like Pippin does feel a bit pushed out of his place, since he is the one who used to sleep with me and now Winston does. But overall, everyone is doing pretty good and we have adjusted our dynamics to having a dog pretty well too. He gets to go see Mom a lot now, every time we go up to the rehab and I send her pictures all the time and I think it helps her mental state to see how well he is doing. I feel like now that we have a dog, I need a second 'pet' icon of our sweet pup!

I look forward to many happy Winston stories from you --and hopefully, no upset kitty stories!

OMG, Winston has taken over my bed! As soon as he sees that I am getting ready for bed, he runs in to my room and stands in the middle of it and waits, As soon as I step foot in my room, he jumps onto the bed cuz he is ready, ready to go to bed with his Lady!!!! It's adorable, even if it was never our intention to let him in the beds at all! (one thunderstorm and we break and put him in bed with us, damn). ;)

Pushy little guy! (I might have caved, too, despite knowing that sometimes a tight little doggie jacket will make them feel more secure during storms. Crying animals = many types of kryptonite!)

How do the kitties feel about sharing the bed?

Winston was frantically trying to get in bed with me - the thunder was gonna get him!! He was spazzed out, I had to do something! He does have a thunder-coat, but it was only Day Two of him being with us and we hadn't gotten all his stuff from Mom's house yet! Now he has his thunder-coat, his regular coat and like five shirts and five pajamas and a sweater and a hoodie and like all the clothes in the world and they all make him feel more secure and less anxious, on the day-to-day and during storms. (yeah, I may have spent $100 on dog clothes - don't judge me!) Also after that storm Mom was like, 'Just leave his crate open and he'll get in there when he's anxious'. Too late, Mom, he sleeps in my bed now!

How do the kitties feel about sharing the bed?

Pippin is the only one who ever really slept with me (Kirk would sometimes sleep on my feet after Sis left for work, but Pippin is my cuddler) - but yeah, he sleeps with me less now. When I get up to pee and plug the IPad in for the night, I go around the house and if I find him, I carry him to bed and then he likes it, but he doesn't come of his own will as much as he used too. :( Good thing the dog is keeping me company (and Hiccup quite a bit too)

I love how you're catching up on comments - but it's a good thing LJ also sends me whatever I said to which you're replying, otherwise I might be a little lost. :P

I'm sorry Pippin's not sleeping with you as much now, but glad that Winston is doing better. (I'd probably buy doggie outfits too, so no judgment here!)

I hope Winston will fit perfectly in your family. It will really help your Mum knowing you have him.

It was an adjustment, but I think we have it down now. All of the animals sort of circled around each other, finding their new spots. It has absolutely helped our mom to know he is well cared for (and spoiled, as we do for our pets!) and she gets to see him a bit more this way, as Sis takes him with her to the rehab every time she goes. :)

*hugs* Good luck with fitting Winston in with everyone. He's such a sweet dog.

Winston has settled in wonderfully! I never want to give him back, tbh. Pippin is a little displaced, just bc he doesn't want to share the bed and between Winston and Hiccup, he def has to share, but I still get a good amount of Pippin cuddles, so it all works out (Yes, Pippin is my special boy, as you know!). Winston is so funny though, like I always knew he was a nice dog, but I never knew how funny he is, he gets so riled up over things like jumping and prancing around when he is happy, it's adorable!

The English Bulldog my friend Carolyn just got is named Winston Blue!

I am really glad you have Winston there with you now and I hope the cats can make the adjustment without too many issues.

OMG, what a cutie! And an excellent name, if I do say so. My sis wants a French bulldog, but they are so expensive and I have moral issues with breed dogs, but otoh, BULLDOGS ARE SO CUTE!!! I think my mom named her dog after Winston Churchill, which I feel a little icky about, but the name really does suit him.

The cats settled in well. Pippin took awhile to get used to the barking - every time our neighbors across the street bring their Shitzu out into the front yard for potty time, Winston goes all protective mode - which is adorable, he acts so fierce over this other dog who can't weigh 6 pounds, lol. But all the cats are used to Winston now and sometimes Hiccup or Pippin will even play with him a bit. TBH, I think they are still more put out about Hiccup being here than they are the dog, lol!

OH WE KNOW!!! We've already bought him pajamas, sweaters Halloween costumes, tshirts, jackets...in fact, we had gotten him a few things when he wasn't even OUR dog yet! We got him some shirts and a Halloween costume back when Grandpa was in the nursing home and we would take Winston up there with us to visit all the old people and we dressed him up for it. Now he just wears clothes regularly all fall and now in the winter we've moved to sweaters. Just bought him a new 'ugly Christmas sweater for dogs' yesterday - (that's seriously what they are branded as at the store, ugly christmas sweaters for dogs, lol). He looks super cute in it!

You know what's funny? We have a very good friend who is a huge Captain America fangirl and like the day before you sent me this comment, we had just bought a Cap tshirt for her dog for Christmas! I can't wait for her to get it and send us pics of him in it!

Watch my journal this week, as I'll try to remember to upload some pics of Winston in adorable clothes!!!
