Opinions and Emotions.
I was going to post yesterday but after everything that happened in Colorado, I was so emotionally drained and I just couldn’t find the energy to make a coherent post. I think Chris Nolan said it well when he said, “The movie theatre is my home, and the idea that someone would violate that innocent and hopeful place in such an unbearably savage way is devastating to me.” I also feel like it hit me so hard because these were our people - fanboys and fangirls who loved something so much that they put on their costumes and their Bat-shirts and went to a midnight showing. My thoughts are with the families and survivors.

I did go see the movie today and I highly recommend you all go see it. It was the perfect final piece to Nolan’s story. Truly. I’ll make a thinky-thoughts post later, maybe after a second viewing.

Before I sign off, let me ask you peoples a few opinions on some fanfic-related things. What do you consider ‘kid!fic’ to be? Stories where the main characters have kids or stories where the main characters are kids? Or both?

I have written another story that is aimed at a reading audience of 6 year olds. I would like to make a tag for it as well as the stories I have previously written for The Nephew. I keep changing my mind on what to call them. Which one do you guys like for stories aimed at children?

Poll #1855396 What should I call my genre?

What should I call fanfic geared towards children?

Children-Specific.

Fic-For-Kids.
4(80.0%)
Children's.

I hope to post my latest Harry Potter fic sometime in the next few days.

The Batman shooting was and is a tragedy. I cried when I heard about it. I can't even begin to understand people like that. I don't want to understand people like that.

I think kidfic is usually for when the characters we know and love HAVE kids, but I could be wrong. Regardless, I think Fic For Kids is more specific to what you're doing.

I cried when I heard about it.

Me too. I just kept reading more and more about it as the day went on, like a compulsion I couldn't make myself stop because something about it hit me rather hard. I hate to say it but I think I kind of get desensitized to one natural disaster after another but this...this was something different. This was one person doing an unspeakable thing to other fellow people.

I think kidfic is usually for when the characters we know and love HAVE kids, but I could be wrong.

I always thought that too - so I had my Dean & Ben fic labeled as such but not my Weechesters fic. But then I went and looked it up and all the fandom dictionaries kept telling me it was both having kids and being kids. Then I got curious what everyone else thought.

Regardless, I think Fic For Kids is more specific to what you're doing.

I just kept changing my mind between Children-Specific and Fic-For-Kids! I am so indecisive! I ended up going with Fic-For-Kids though.

You've seen how Christian Bale went to visit the survivors and the victims' families, right? That's so much more cool and moving than any politician doing it, at least to me.

Can you believe three MORE assholes have been caught in theatres getting ready to do stupid shit? I think it's been three. I'm trying to stick my head in the sand about it. It's not an admirable reaction, but darned if I know what else to do.

One more day of sweet freedom....

I hadn't seen that! Yes, that is so much better than politicans because with them you always get the feeing it is more for their PR than anything else.

This is why they bumped up security at some theaters in major cities - worried about copycats. It was three, at least when I read about it. One was just mad the movie hadn't started yet and started saying a bunch of stupid things elluding to Colorado and he got taken down pretty damn quick by security - stupid to think he could run his mouth and not get in trouble for it, considering everything. The second guy was a dumbass who thought he could go to a showing of Batman in the aftermath of Colorado drunk off his ass. The third guy was the real threat - he got pulled over for a speeding ticket and they found Batman tickets in his pocket and guns in his trunk. That one was scary.

One more day of sweet freedom....

Good luck going back to the ol grind mill.

My god, but people can be assholes. Psychopathic assholes. This is why my husband and I will move out to the boonies and live in seclusion for the rest of our days.

Possibly with a satellite dish so we still can have our electronics-based entertainments of internet and visual media.

Smart move.

We love our Internet! Now if only we can determine a way to bounce the signal all around, so that our Farm of Hermititude location is Super Sekrit!

It really hit home, didn't it? I completely agree.

The Colorado shooting did really hit home, yes. The one story I was following via the victim's Twitter really hit me because as I could tell from things in their info, the person was a fan of Dr. Who and Smallville and the other one (who was missing and later turned up among the bodies) was a Spiderman fan and a Lord of the Rings fan. It was all too easy to relate.

*hugs* Yes, the fact they were fans is so hard. I plan on seeing the movie probably on Monday. I was going to today but my body went no, sleeptime.

Kidfic to me is characters having kids or being kids. I think fic for kids works for what you write for your nephew.

Did you get to see the movie yet? You know, as soon as the movie started, I thought, "We shouldn't have come, I am not going to be able to enjoy this." I just couldn't stop thinking about Colorado. But by about the 40 minute mark, I was so engrossed that I did end up highly enjoying it. In fact, I oddly felt better when I left the theater than I had for the past day or so.

Kidfic to me is characters having kids or being kids.

That is what all the fanfic dictionaries said too but I was surprised by that since I always thought it was the main characters having kids and that was it. I still decided not to label my Wee!Weasley fic as 'kid fic' since I had already labeled it 'wee!weasley'. I don't know what I'll choose to do if I ever get around to writing that Elementary school Avengers AU my brain wants to get out.

I think fic for kids works for what you write for your nephew.

That was my most recent choice, as I kept changing my mind, so I ended up sticking with Fic-For-Kids.

I did see it and loved it. It was a beautiful and complex movie and I want to see it again. Yeah, when the lights went down I had a moment of feeling uncomfortable but then I was pulled in and left feeling better than I expected.

Oh and I finished and submitted the Narnia fic. I'll let you know when its posted somewhere that I can share it.
dodger_sister: comfortdodger_sister on July 25th, 2012 08:42 pm (UTC)
It had such a deeper emotional pull than the previous Batman movies and that is saying something, since those did pretty well on their own. I loved the idea of social classes and discontent as well as that theme of rising up from a dark place. Not to mention how fucking awesome Joseph Gordon Levitt was - what a great character they made for him. And bonus!Cillian Murphy. (in fact, there were a lot of little people throughout this that made my day).

I never felt 'nervous' but like you, I did just feel uncomfortable and a little off when the movie started. But I left feeling oddly better.

Oh and I finished and submitted the Narnia fic. I'll let you know when its posted somewhere that I can share it.

Cool. Did you get a beta for it? I know you had mentioned being unsure about that before. Let me know when it is up!

It was just so upsetting to think someone could do something like that. The stories coming out of it were unreal.

i think of kid fic as the main characters have kids.

That's what I thought too but all the fandom dictionaries I found said it was both having kids and being kids. I still only labeled one of my fics as such, and that was my Dean & Ben story. I think I'll probably stick with our thinking on 'kid fic = characters having kids' though.
