It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year!
As my sister is fond of singing as she sets up the decorations - “It’s the most wonderful time of the year. When children are crying and parents are dying and it’s all in good cheer…” I think she needs to work on her lyrics a little, but the sentiment remains - We Love Halloween.

It’s weird because at my Mom’s house, we got lots of trick-or-treaters. So much so that eventually I would turn off the porch light, just so I could save some candy for myself. I liked to dress up and when my sister moved home, she would join me for some good horror movie watching/candy passing out. One year she made me a Pippin Took outfit, with cardboard ears and everything - (she tied the tops of werewolf feet to my shoes for my Hobbit feet). We carved pumpkins - (our infamous Krusty the Klown) - but we didn’t really do the whole scary thing back then.

Then we moved in together but we were in an apartment, so we didn’t really get trick-or-treaters. The apartment complex did have a Halloween decoration contest, but mostly people just hung lights off their balconies or carved pumpkins. There wasn’t a lot you could do to decorate outside an apartment. I was always so bummed. We still watched horror movies, but there wasn’t much point in dressing up without trick-or-treaters and there was no decorating either. We still did pumpkins but Halloween felt so lame, when usually it was the holiday I enjoyed the most - (lots of candy and no family to deal with). My sister promised when we got a house, we would celebrate right.

Boy, she was NOT kidding. It started with a few gravestones and then a witch that cackled and it has just grown from there. They first year we lived in the house was also the year I broke both my legs, so my sister took pity on me and bought me a skimpy little pixie outfit, which of course I loved. But I live in Michigan and it is too fucking cold for the sexy outfits - (after about an hour I had to go put my jeans on). After that we started doing themes - zombies, then grim reapers - (that was last year when The BFF and I stood in the window in long black robes with our faces painted white and a light on us. The effect was such that all you could see from the outside was just our white faces. Several of the children thought we were decorations or even holograms and when they got close enough, we would slowly rotate our heads and make them piss themselves. It was awesome).

This year we still have the black robes from last year, so we are doing a witch theme. We have a giant cauldron that we plan on putting some sort of fog machine in so it looks like we are brewing something, and then a smaller cauldron that kids will have to stick their hands in to get at the candy. We are actually going to be outside on the front lawn this year, so it will be performance art all night for us.

Yeah, we take this holiday seriously.

What a fun holiday for both of you! I live in an apartment, and it's not nearly as much fun as being in a house you can decorate to your hearts' content.

I also thought I was really into Halloween but something has been unleashed in my sister and now she does it hardcore. It is super fun!

Yeah, living in an apartment does not sit well with holiday decorating, especially for Halloween. Bummer, but at least you'll get to dress Pippin up in a ridiculous costume! None of the cats we have now will let us dress them up for the holiday and we stare forlornly at the costume section of the pet store. :)

Pippin is tolerant of being dressed up, but only briefly. I have to snap that photo quick!

Sounds like an awesome plan!

I am sure I will have awesome tales of screaming terrified children once Halloween is over! It's gonna be great (as long as it doesn't rain)!

I"m planning on decorating my library. I already have put some Halloween books out, have poems I'm going to print out and need to go to the dollar store and get more decorations. Your decorations sound awesome.

It'd be cool to have a whole library to decorate. Some year you should do a series of spooky photos and hang them around the library! Or a pumpkin carving contest for the students, though maybe you don't want pumpkins in the library with the books. :)

Try Kmart for decorations - they have them really quite cheap as well. If you have a Kmart there.

Our decorations are awesome - I'll have pics soon! J just asked the other day if you were going to join us and I was all, "Dude, she has to work the next day," and she was like, "But it's the most wonderful time of the year!" <-- except she kind of screamed it in her crazy overexcited voice. Really, she hasn't even gotten into the Halloween candy yet and she's all amped up. ;)

I will and actually I'll probably be moving into my apartment the next day if it all works. I love having the space to decorate but I'm still figuring out how best to do it and this is my way to do something for the parent-teacher conferences as well.

Halloween is awesome, I love the sound of your halloween. I'm not too scary with my outfit this year. I'm a cat....in leather. But I will be going out and enjoying the holiday :D
dodger_sister: holiday 3dodger_sister on October 15th, 2012 11:12 pm (UTC)
Ooooooh, cat in leather is awesome! It sounds like the exact kind of costume I would love. I saw this female-version of Robin (you know, like Batman & Robin) at the Halloween store and I couldn't stop staring at it. My sister was all, "Do you want it?" and I was like, "Yes, but look how skimpy it is. I will freeze my girly bits off." But a cat in leather sounds awesome!

You just gave me a great idea - next time we do a witch-theme (I am sure we will again in a few years) - I'm going to be a black cat! I am the smallest of the three of us and I could wear like full body skintight outfit and then they could chain me up in the front yard and I could hiss at everyone that walks by and act all feral and crazy. It'd be awesome!

Have a good Halloween, babe!

I love it, full body leather, so shouldn't be too cold. The robin coustume sounds cool, I've seen stuff like it and it would freeze the girly parts off. Last year I did freeze off my girl parts, determined not to do that this year.

I love that idea!! I can imagine that, hissing, meowing all night. That would be so cool.

You to hun, halloween is one of the best holidays :D

Your decorations this year sound brilliant! I hope you manage to get photos up. I especially like that you're gonna make the kids reach into the cauldron for their candy. *evil grin*

We put our graveyard up over the weekend. This year it's gotten fencing and giant spiders :) and I swear I will manage a post with pics cos I think it looks really good. :)
dodger_sister: holiday 3dodger_sister on October 15th, 2012 11:20 pm (UTC)
There will definitely be photos - my sister has them up already, I'll probably share them next week.

I especially like that you're gonna make the kids reach into the cauldron for their candy. *evil grin*

heehee That was my idea. We picked up a big cauldron for the fog machine and I said, "Don't we want a little one too?" and they were like, "Why?" and I said, "Uh, for the candy. So the kids have to reach their hands in our cauldron and we can tell them it is frog's eyeballs in there." The BFF just turned right around and went back for the little cauldron too!

Oh, yeah! I remember you had an awesome graveyard. You had like little fences and a skull head and something else I loved - (wait, went and looked and it was the awesome way you stretched your spiderwebs across the graves! That was cool!) Yeah, I want pics of the graveyard again this year!
