How Did You Get Started Watching "Your Show"?
So, during a discussion with someone else, it came up that I both watch "Supernatural" and enjoy Supernatural Fandom with my RL best friend. It has happened a few times that I got shocked reactions from my Fandom-Peeps that I would share my secret fandom-ness with a RL person - namely The BFF.

But the thing is, I met The BFF through Fandom. And it was her that got me into "Supernatural" in the first place. And that led me to wonder how everyone else got started watching whatever their current obsession Show is.

First, in short, my sister and I met and made friends with The BFF, liptonrm, through Lord of the Rings Fandom. My sister knew her online, only to realize through a chance of circumstance, that they worked across the street from each other. She has been in our lives ever since. (For which I am eternally grateful.)

After Lord of the Rings came and went, (but never really from our hearts, because our hearts will always belong to The Shire), we each flopped around in our own separate fandoms for awhile. We enjoyed each other's shows but nothing seemed to last.

Then one day, in 2005, The BFF burst out about some show with really hot brothers hunting ghosts and driving some car. We thought it sounded good and were glad she was enjoying it so much. She then began to spout at us each week about what The Brothers were doing now.

"Watch this show!" she declared.
"Oh, I don't really have time for a new show right now," I said, all snobby like. Frankly, I think I was tired of floundering without a True Love. I was spoiled right out of the gate by being involved in two wonderful and active fandoms at once - Lord of the Rings and The West Wing. So, by 2005, I was just tired of trying new relationships that never went anywhere. Nothing was going to be the way it used to be, when LotR and TWW were in my life.

The BFF carries on with her Show and I enjoy her little weekly ramblings, because I can see she has found a new Fandom.

Then the Season One finale comes along and she is freaking out. I ask her, "What the hell happened to your Brothers on that Show? Your wigging." (I may have very well said the actual word "wigging" because I am just that cool.)

Then the Season One DVDs came out. She went on a little trip to see our friend, hiyacynth. They watched the DVDs together and hiyacynth was hooked. A few weeks later, my sister goes to visit hiyacynth. The BFF comes down to stay with me for the weekend.

When she comes in, she may or may not have been clutching the Supernatural DVDs to her chest. There is some debate between us about that. She declares that I am going to watch this show now.

"I am?" I ask and then sit down, cuz what the heck, sure, I'll watch.

We watched for 14 hours straight. We still debate exactly how long I let us sleep before I woke her up so we could watch the rest.

At the exact same time, hiyacynth has sat my sister down and is forcing her to marathon "Supernatural" as well. Halfway through the weekend my sister calls, perhaps drunkenly, to declare we have a new Show. And I declare, "No, I found us a new show." And then we both start talking at once - ABOUT SUPERNATURAL!!

And the rest is history.

Now every week The BFF, My Sister and Myself all gather together to watch a new episode of Our Show. hiyacynth quite often calls us during the commercial breaks and screams into the phone and then promptly hangs up. (Well, that's what it sounds like from my spot on the couch where I can just barely make out her side of the conversation.)

And now I have Supernatural in my life...and I stumble alone in the dark no longer.

So...what is the one show you are watching right now that you would declare to be Your Show? And how is it that you discovered Your Show in the first place? Do you share it with anyone in your RL?

Also, I just excitedly realized that this is the kind of question you can repost in your journal! So, respond in my comments or answer in your own journal and ask your flist about their Shows.

In Sum: I heart Supernatural.

Supernatural is definitely my show. I honestly can't remember when I started watching it, though. I watch TV on my computer, generally downloading the episodes so I can get to them when I have time. That also enables me to catch up with shows if I miss them from the start. I think it is likely I started downloading it after seeing Jensen on Smallville and wondering what else he was on. I watched Dark Angel first and then must have started SPN after that. But I know I was hooked from the start.

Before Supernatural, it was Buffy. I think it was halfway through the first season when I finally caved in to a coworker's urging and made the point of watching it. I don't remember what episode it was, but I remember literally falling off my couch laughing and that was it for me. Loved loved loved. Not all seasons equally, (season 6 really sucked, with the exception of "Once More with Feeling," of course) but it still remains one of my favorite shows. Other big favorites: Firefly, West Wing, and the early years of Smallville.

Replying to this comment...better late than never.

Jensen is an excellent reason to start watching any show! I saw him on Days of Our Lives years ago and then nothing until Supernatural - and then I went back and watched Dark Alec, er Dark Angel, and Smallville. (and Dawson's Creek, shut up! lol)

I never got into Smallville, though I watched all of Jensen's episodes and all of James Marsters' episodes - but I have issues with Superman as a character. Though I love Rosenbaum's portrayal of Lex Luthor. And high school teen dramas with evil villains are always fun, so I suspect if I actually watched it, I would enjoy it.

Oh Hell Yes to the Firefly. I didn't discover it until after it had already been canceled. What a bunch of bullshit that was.

THE WEST WING - my very first TV Fandom ever!!!! I have to say, it may still be my favorite television show that I ever watched.

Buffy - I have now watched every single episode in order. There were things I liked about Season Six - Spike and Dawn and Anya to name a few - but there were some storylines and emotional plot points that dragged on too much for me. I have decided that I am declaring Season Three to be my favorite season. I'm going to stick by that.

I don't have My Show. But I watch both Supernatural and Glee with my husband, and we are slowly taking our married couple friends through both Buffy and Angel (We're in season 4 Buffy, Season 1 Angel, so we do one disc of each every other week, because they were running concurrently starting then.)

But if I miss anything when it airs, I can now watch it online whenever. And on that note, I think computer technology has ruined family tv nights! But that's so not what you were talking about....

And DUH! I will love Firefly FOREVER AND EVER! Worst cancellation choice ever Fox. WORST.

Lol, that was so cute! :D

Supernatural. And believe me that nothing ever hit me as strong as this show. Might be because I was really, really down when I discovered it.

March 2008, I was very late to the party, but that's me for you. I was freaking out with college and the last exams and final papers, exhausted, with a few panic attacks in front and behind me. I desperately needed something to cheer me up, because back then, I really had nothing.

But how did I actually get there? It's kinda blurry, honestly. I remember me and a friend of mine (a boy) used to watch some show on Sunday night (now I even can't remember what it was), but because the TV shows here always start much later than they're supposed to, we were on the phone together, chatting with the TV mute, waiting. And before that, there was this show with two really hot, pretty guys (no idea about the plot) and he asked me who I think is prettier (I believe it was Playthings), I'm fairly sure I said Dean (the blonde, shorter one), even back then.
Then I said to myself, hey, it looks actually pretty interesting. I found out what it was, downloaded Pilot, read some fics meanwhile. Also Wincest, which is obviously why I have no problem with this theme now. After watching the first episode, I felt like I was run over by a train, because it was so awesome. And the boys, in their own language and the accent, which was still very obvious then, were much hotter and prettier than I initially thought.

Like I said before, I watch it alone, because I really can't stop talking; I yell, I scream, I cry... and I'm really happy that I'm alone at that times. I let everyone else go to sleep and then comes my time. I so can't wait for Saturday! :)

You know, I was watching the show from the beginning of second season - but until I got off the drugs, I don't think I realized how great the show was. I was that out of it.

But your description of the stress and shit in your life when you discovered it, feels like how I felt when I threw myself into it earlier this year. SPN helped ward off more than one panic attack on my part. And people say that acting is a shallow job with no meaning.

I love that you were watching SPN on mute and that was enough to drag you into it!!!! I wonder what you were waiting to watch when you discovered it. Was it a CW show? SPN was originally paired with Gilmore Girls, I think, and then it was paired with Smallville (it's so nice they are back together again even if it means they moved the "Angel of Thursday" from, you know, Thursday.)

You know, I have never watched a single episode of Supernatural during an original viewing by myself. Ever. Now I kind of want too, just for the experience. :)

Hahaha, that is an AWESOME story! I'm glad you found a new Love. :)

As for me, I think you can guess, but... Supernatural! All the way! :P

I actually started watching it because of Buffy. I bought a Buffy magazine a few years back, noted that Amber Benson was going to be in an episode of something called Supernatural about two brothers, and thought "huh, I should check that out". And then a year later I did. I was hooked from the first episode. The rest is history.
(Well, except for the part where I saw the Dean/Cas chemistry and went searching the internets and found LJ and went totally insane with fandomness (totally a word) and started writing slash and found awesome friends and discovered Misha Collins and... yeah. You get the point.)
dodger_sister: broswinchesters_nito_punkdodger_sister on October 22nd, 2010 06:08 am (UTC)
Still catching up on comments...

I always forget that Amber Benson was in SPN! Cuz I hadn't seen Tara on Buffy yet when I saw "bloodlust" ep of SPN. I hadn't seen past season three of Buffy until just this last year. I'm all caught up now though.

Oh my - so SPN is your first fandom? And it's totally Dean/Cas' fault? And Misha Collins is totally to blame? Awwwww. Meeeeeeeeesha!

I know, can you remember your life before Fandom? I can't believe I was away from the awesome-ness that is Fandom for so long. - (After Lord of the Rings and The West Wing kind of fell off and I got really sick, there was no fandom-ness in my life for like five years. /gasp/ It was awful.) How did we survive our lives before all of this?

For the record, I only scream into the phone and abruptly hang up because my commercials are ending. Chicago-aired Show seems to start about three seconds before MI.

Ha! Yeah - actually they seem to be almost exactly on time - but we always get the Sam Bernstein commercials here. It just sounds funny when I can only hear one side of the conversation - "blahblahdeanblahblahsam, okayokay" /click/ The first couple of times I was like, "What just happened? Did she just hang up on her? Oh, Show!" Cuz I'm smart like that.

I think I started when Cas appeared in the 4th season of Supernatural... and then I discovered a high school friend had all the seasons on DVD... then I became really obsessed and now I think that's all that I kinda talk about with my other friend who got addicted too.

I'm a little behind on comments, but...

You are not the first person who has said it is all Castiel/Misha's fault that they started watching Supernatural. It is awesome that you have so many people in your RL who watch it too though. I can't stand to have to talk to "normal" people about "regular" things, so I try to get as many people as I can to watch it, so I can just talk about SPN all the time. I even got a bunch of people who work at my physical therapy place to watch it, so I could talk to them about SPN, instead of making polite chit-chat about the weather while I work out, lol.

Are you the reason your other friend got addicted to SPN?

That made me laugh, I got into Supernatural because I was reading Dark Angel Fanfic which lead to a super Jensen Ackles obession (S2), I actually read the first half of the episodes for season one. I was reading fanfic before I saw the show. It was a slippery slope. I had way too much time on my hands, so I started reading Wincest and then J2, which in any other fandom I found sooooo wrong. nearly six years later I still love my boys! All four of them.

I'm catching up on comments from when I was in Chicago...

DARK ALEC! The name of that show is Dark Alec! Get it right. Ha! Sorry.

So, you were reading Dark Alec fan-fic before you were watching the show? How does one decide to randomly pick a fandom and start reading fic before they watch the show? Is that what you are telling me happened? Had you seen Jensen on anything else before? Wow - you are the first person who has pointed at Dark Alec as the reason for your SPN-watching. Yeah...Jensen will do that to you. ;)

I'm kind of sad that I missed out on those early days of SPN fandom.

It's so weird to me how RPS was such an immediate part of the SPN fandom - even LotR, which had a huge RPS-fanbase, took some time to get off the ground in regards to the RPS. Jared & Jensen just made it too easy. lol

EDIT: because I apparently don't know how to type.

That is an awesome story! I actually don't have a show I feel that strong about. Not since the X-Files back in the days of the yahoo groups. As soon as the credits would roll I'd be online dissecting the show. Which lead to fanfic, which lead to slash, which lead to lj and here I am. Now, the boy and I watch The Mentalist, NCIS:LA, Leverage, and White Collar together and he doesn't mock me too badly for my fanish glee.

Oh, yes Firefly, I miss you. Worst decision by a network ever.

Still behind on comments from vacation...

Oh - but maybe Supernatural can be your new Show!!!!

My sister started in the X-Files fandom too! She was in college and she was right there dissecting the show and reading every piece of fic she could get her hands on. She never wrote in that fandom though.

I didn't have the internet (or my own computer) until 2000, so for me, that post-episode dissecting came with The West Wing.

NCIS: LA - God, I have to catch up on my episodes from this season.

Yes - Firefly, I love that show so fricking much. That's a show that could have lasted a long time, with the way each episode was set-up, it had limitless possibilities. Fox should burn for that decision. <--clearly I feel strongly about this.
