Fic: Burned In All The Best Ways - X-Men (First Class), Charles/Erik, Schmoop, Romance, PG-13

Just spent a lovely evening with ceitfianna, hanging out, watching movies, eating good food and cupcakes! The cupcakes were because it is HER BIRTHDAY!! I got her a comic book, but I also wrote her this story. It is my first X-Men: First Class fic ever! /waves and bows/ This idea, like all my best fic, came to me in the shower.

Dedication: To ceitfianna, for her birthday! I am so glad you needed a paper shredder last summer at the exact time my mother was selling one or else we may never have met. I hope your birthday is wonderful and that the following year brings you all the good things your heart desires. Happy birthday, babe!

Summary: Charles and Erik share a drink. And then another. And then another. And then…
X-Men (First Class), Schmoop, Romance, Charles/Erik, PG-13 with Drunkenness and 953 words.

Disclaimer: Charles, Erik, The X-Men and Marvel Comics do not belong to me. If they did, I would be rolling in a bathtub of money right now, not writing this fic. I did write this fic though and it makes me no money, hence no rolling in the bathtub.
Feedback: Bring it. dodger_sister / TheArtofDodger@comcast.net
Beta’d: By the superbly awesome baylorsr.
Author's Notes: I literally had not a single idea for a birthday story for ceitfianna. I came up with a Narnia fic idea and then realized it was a Christmas story. So I was back at square one. Then this story came to me, as they often do, in the shower. I wrote it all in one go and even though the idea that sparked it all - Charles seeing in his mind’s eyes his own lips and realizing it was Erik fantasizing about them - never made it into the story, I rather like how it came out.

They had started out slow with some red wine and it had been good and filling and just what Charles had needed after a long day. Erik suggested a game of chess and they closed the doors to the study for a bit of privacy, the first they had experienced all day.

The wine had emptied out fairly quickly and Erik had brought over a bottle of whiskey, not even bothering to use the pretense of glasses.

“I shouldn’t,” Charles said and waved him off. “Too much letting my guard down and I end up letting my guard down, if you follow.”

Erik cocked his head to one side and looked inquisitively at the other man and Charles suddenly felt open and bare, much like he supposed others felt when he was looking at them, searching inside them for what they weren’t saying.

“Maybe that would be a good thing for you,” Erik told him. “Try testing yourself, see how you do when you do not have all your right faculties.”

“You just want to get me sloshed and take advantage of me,” Charles answered with a smirk, letting it shine through in his eyes for Erik to see.

“Perhaps,” Erik said with his own smile and took a swig straight from the bottle.

When he handed it over, Charles hesitated for only a second before swallowing down his own mouthful.

It burned in all the best ways.

***

“No, I am not even kidding!” Charles said and leaned forward, across the table to place a hand on Erik’s shoulder.

The whiskey was burning through them now and both men had long since given up trying to concentrate enough to play the game in front of them and instead were regaling each other with stories of various times in which their powers had caused ‘inconvenience’ in their lives.

“But he was…he was…” Erik gasped out and tried to quell his own laughter enough to finish the sentence, though at this point he wasn’t sure where he was going with it.

“I’m telling you,” Charles cried, “it was an accident. I was fifteen and I didn’t know I could project into people’s minds yet! I just…I was just casually thinking about kissing his mom and then…”

“I can’t believe you put that image in the poor boy’s head,” Erik gasped out. “He must of thought he was a terrible pervert, thinking about his best mate and his mother going at it like howler monkeys,” and Erik tipped the whiskey back again just as Charles replied, “Well, his mom was quite stunning!”

The whiskey sprayed everywhere; down Erik’s chin, across the chess board, little splatters landing on the tip of Charles’ nose.

Their laughter turned to giggles then and had either of them been thinking straight, they would have been glad they had closed the study doors, lest anyone see their display.

Erik took deep, calming breaths and pulled on Charles’ arm until the other man stumbled out of his chair and folded himself on the floor. Erik slid out of his own chair and settled next to him, let his body rest against the table.

“Sometimes I wonder about you in your younger days,” Erik said. “I would have liked to have seen that.”

“I would have liked to have you there,” Charles said and leaned back against the table as well, let his arm press against Erik’s own, shoulder to shoulder.

“What did you want to be when you were a child?” Erik asked him. “Surely this isn’t where you saw your life.”

“Actually, I wanted to be a book binder,” Charles told him with a fond smile.

“Really? Isn’t that an assembly line job? That’s where you saw yourself with your genius mind?”

“I didn’t understand what it was at the time. I think I thought I would get to work in a giant library warehouse where everything smelled like dusty leather books and I could read all day.”

Erik snorted and Charles shoved him playfully.

“Shut it. I was six years old. What did you want to be when you were six?”

“It’s hard to remember sometimes, but I do know I was fascinated with cars. I think I wanted to make them but I had no concept of what that meant. I just wanted to put each piece in, bit by bit, and see how they worked.”

Charles eyes started to fall shut and he leaned against Erik’s shoulder.

“And I wanted to drive,” Erik continued. “I wanted to drive and go and find somewhere better. Even when I was that young, I knew there was something more out there for me.”

“You are never content with where you are,” Charles said but it wasn’t accusatory sounding in the least. “You always want to find something better.”

“Not always,” Erik said softly. “Sometimes I am more than happy with exactly where I am.”

Charles titled his head up then, opened his eyes enough to see Erik’s face, wanted to know the expression that came with such an open statement from this man.

“When I am exactly where I’m suppose to be, I am smart enough to see it,” Erik said and then he was leaning down, pressing his mouth against Charles’ own and it was soft and lazy and buzzed through both of them with warmth and heat.

When Erik pulled away, Charles reached for him, gripped the front of the other man’s shirt with his fingers curled tight.

“I think your experiment was a success,” Charles told him. “Letting my guard down can provide astounding results,” and then he was pulling Erik towards him and pressing their lips together once again and it burned in all the best ways.
