How May I Direct Your Call?
So, it was kind of a crazy day. It seemed like the phone rang off the hook all day,

My dad lost his lower half of one leg in the Vietnam War. Lately, as he gets older and has put on a ton of weight, it keeps getting infections. A lot. They have wanted to put him in the hospital so they could get it cleaned up but my dad has refused - a lot. I don’t blame him for not wanting to go in the hospital for an extended stay, but at some point you have to do what is best for your health. My brother called today to say he took my dad to the clinic and he finally agreed to go in. But they can’t get him in for like another two weeks and I am positive that by then my dad will have changed his mind. He also called me himself later and graphically described what they plan to do - which, medical things I did not need to hear.

Then my mom called to say she had fallen down and broken her wrist. My sister went and took her to the ER. They said she broke her arm in two different places. Thankfully the bones are still aligned which means a cast will probably do the trick. She is wearing a splint until the swelling goes down and then she will see a doc about a cast. The Nephew called her on the phone while she waiting for my sister to pick her up and she told him she had broken her arm. He was a little freaked out to hear his grandma in that much pain.

The kicker of all this is how it happened. She was out walking her dog and someone had their two dogs (a puppy and an adult) out for a walk Not On A Leash. So her dog tries to go over to see the puppy and she is restraining him from that and in the meantime, the adult sees this as aggression or whatever and tries to attack my mom’s dog, knocking my mom over in the process. The neighbors pulled all three dogs off each other and helped my mom up, but come on… they were out walking their dogs not on a leash, which is totally illegal and unsafe! My sister was adamant that my mom report it to the police, as was my cousin who is a vet tech and the nurse at the hospital. Thankfully, at least, my mom’s dog is okay.

I also found out that my aunt had to put her dog to sleep today. It was a rescue dog who had been abused and it had severe aggressive issues but she worked hard with the dog to get it under control. Lately, as the dog was getting older, the aggression has come back. She tried to attack my cousin, who specializes in working with abused dogs and knows how to approach and subdue aggressive behavior, and even she couldn’t do anything for this dog. With her grandkids spending the summer with her, my aunt decided there was no other choice. But we are sad for her.

So, yes, the phone rang all day with updates on all of these things.

On the upside to the phone ringing all the time, in the last two days I have gotten to have good long talks with some people I hadn’t in awhile - my little brother (we usually only talk about whatever is going on with my parents but we actually talked about some stuff going on in his life this time. He has been following the twitter of some guy who is walking across the US as a homeless man to see how many people are willing to help homeless people. He talked about that. I talked about Misha Collins. Who is surprised?), The Nephew (who wanted to know if we were having a party for my sister’s birthday and then tried to talk me into having one so he could come. We settled on him, The BFF, my sister, myself, cupcakes, sleepover, movie watching and he finally agreed that was sufficient), my friend D (the one who lives out of state and that I haven’t talked to since April) and Kevin (who I have literally been playing phone tag with since the beginning of May).

I called Kevin yesterday to tell him that his ladies need to be watching “Bunheads” because it is by the maker of Gilmore Girls and it has dancing in it. They are all fans of both those things. It premiered tonight on ABCFamily, so I will be watching that during my breakfast tomorrow. The Gilmore Girls and dancing - who is shocked that I am watching this show? No one? Thought not. Kevin called me back to say that his girls would all want to watch this show but they weren’t home and he didn’t know how to program the DVR. I mocked him endlessly for his tech-illiteracy. All I could think of was Wolverine trying to work his cell-phone.

In final news, The Nephew has requested that I write him another story. I told him only for Christmas and his birthdays but then, sucker that I am, I agreed to an end of the summer/going back to school story for him in a few months. (“Can you write me just one more story? It can be about whatever you want.”) This kid seriously needs to be reading all the fanfic but as we all know, most fanfic is not fit for kids. How hard would it be to start a trend where people write kid-specific fic? It could be a new subgenre and there could be a fic-for-kids community and stuff. The Nephew needs it, you guys!!

Well, that was a long-ass post but I guess that is all for a few days.

That is just way too much bad news for one day.

I have yet to read the Avengers fic you wrote for the nephew. I started reading it during a break at the conference I was at last week, but as soon as I read about Tony in the Captain America pajamas I busted out laughing and thought I better put it aside until later when I wasn't around my professional colleagues.

Thank you for the support, darling. It has been a long couple of days. It looks like next week may be better though. /knock on virtual wood/

LOL Yeah, it was written for a kid but I made sure to put some humor in there for my grown-up friends too! Definitely don't read it around professionals, if for no other reason than that all the characters are just a bit over-the-top and thus, hopefully, quite funny.

I'm sorry there was so much bad news today. Hopefully all of it will be resolved successfully and healthily (but oh, I feel for your aunt!). And at least you got to have many good conversations, which is a big plus.

Maybe you can request permission to print out some kid-friendly stories that you encounter, and then let the authors know what The Nephew thought?

dodger_sister: angstdodger_sister on June 14th, 2012 08:50 pm (UTC)
Thank you, babe. It's been a long week for sure. Mom got her cast today, so hopefully that will help her feel better and have more mobility again (the splint went all the way past her fingers, so she was literally one-handed all week). Idk about dad - we'll see if he actually agrees to the the doc's plan.

(but oh, I feel for your aunt!)

We sent her a sympathy card yesterday. She really did try so hard with that dog but by the end the dog was taking a Valium everyday and was so drugged she could barely walk. It was just no way for her to live.

And at least you got to have many good conversations, which is a big plus.

I did! That was nice amongst all the bad. I never get a chance to talk to my boys, so I was happy about that at least.

I could do that. I used to print out fanfic that I thought my cousin would like because she didn't have time to scroll around the internet (a job and two kids took all her time) but with printed copies, she could just read them on her lunch break. The problem is that while a lot of gen stories are rated for a kid The Nephew's age, they aren't aimed at kids his age. They don't have that tone to them that draws a 6 year old in. I probably need to put out feelers and see if people can rec me things that might be good for a kid his age (though not necessarily as over-the-top as my story was.)

Clearly, more people just need to write stories for their nephews/nieces!

I hope things continue to improve healthwise for everyone. Maybe your Dad will go through the cycle of "hell no, I won't go" and get back around to the idea of, "I really should go" by the time his appointment rolls around. Fingers crossed!

Even with nine nieces/nephews, I have never felt the urge to write for them. Me likey porn too much!

*snugs* Wow, that's a lot in one day.

I'm glad it ends with happy news and your nephew is the best.
dodger_sister: upsetdodger_sister on June 14th, 2012 09:13 pm (UTC)
Thanks, darling. It was a long day. Mom had to go back to the ER the next day because the swelling was worse. They said her arm was rotated and they fixed it and gave her Oxy. You have met my mom and seen how tiny she is - can you imagine her taking Oxy?

I was definitely happy to get to talk to all my boys in the middle of the chaos. The Nephew was adamant that we have a little party for my sister.

TN: What is she doing for her birthday?
Me: You know what she told me? She said she wants to stay home and play video games all day for her birthday because she never gets to play her video games. She always has to go to work instead.
TN: That is true. But what about a party?
Me: We aren't having a party, buddy.
TN: Can't we just have a little party and then I can come?

lol That kid has me wrapped around his fingers. :)

He's a wise kid, parties are always the best as are presents.

Sorry for all the bad news, I hope your dad gets the help he needs with his leg.
The dog off the leash thing was not okay, I'm so sorry your Mom got hurt due to someone elses foolishness. I hope the cast is enough to do the trick.
I love how much your nephew loves reading, there should be a gen/kid fic comm.......I'd suck at it, all my stories lead to porn
dodger_sister: angstdodger_sister on June 14th, 2012 09:58 pm (UTC)
Thanks, darling. My mom got her cast today, so hopefully that will help keep her pain down. Idk about my dad. Honestly he should have done something a long time ago. The man just does not take cre of himself the way he should. Parents - you can't tell them what to do. /shrug/

My mom did report the dog-off-the-leash thing to the cops. I just figured she wouldn't, she can be so passive sometimes. Everybody was telling her she needed to and the hospital is required to report it by law anyways, so the cops finally came and talked to her.

My nephew is a big reader - he loves to read. I think he will really get into fanfic when he gets a little older. The thing with comic type fic (Avengers, X-Men, Teen Titans) is that it would be pretty easy to find a gen-specific action/adventure type comm I think for him to read from when he is like 11/12 years old. But right now even those types of fic are above his reading level and he wants to be reading fic now, when nothing on the internet is at his level (let alone that so much of it is porn!) More people just need to write these kinds of fics-for-kids, dammit!
lizibabeslizibabes on June 14th, 2012 10:59 pm (UTC)
I hope your Mom feels better with the cast on and it doesn't drive her too crazy having it on. I may have lied in the past to get out of wearing them. Your right about not being able to tell parents what to do.

It's good that she did and they've come to see her. Over here dog's off the leash aren't often taken seriously, so nothing happens till the dog has done several bad things or something really bad.

Superhereo fic does seem like it could easily be gen, because you don't need porn to save the day. I've seen case fics with no pairing criminal minds fic, but the cases aren't really kid friendly with out the porn, but I think there are a lot of fandoms that could write fic with out them being adult only. For now it looks like your his own personal fic writer :)

Oh sweetie, dang is that a lot of bad news phone calls. Good thing you had a couple nice ones in there to even it out. ((hugs))

The Nephew has you wrapped around his little finger doesn't he? A party and a story. *laughs* He's gonna take over the world when he's older isn't he?
dodger_sister: upsetdodger_sister on June 14th, 2012 10:04 pm (UTC)
Thanks, darling. It was a lot of bad news in one day, that is for damn sure. It seems like all I have done all week is call people and make arangements for help for my parents and upate all the siblings on everything. I know it is my job to deal with these things because my sister is at work but wow, did I earn my non-existent paycheck this week.

Mom has the good drugs now and Dad is still waiting for a spot to open up in the clinic.

The other phone calls were good though. I love talking to my boys and it had bene to long!

He's gonna take over the world when he's older isn't he?

I figure The Nephew will be prime to take over the world in the next two or three years, really. :)

I hope your mom is OK! And that your dad hasn't changed his mind. I can understand not wanting to stay at the hospital, but it sounds painful to get infections all the time.

I hope all the bad news hasn't gotten you down too bad, bb. It's tough when there's so much at the same time.

Yay, Kevin! I have missed your Kevin posts. :)
dodger_sister: phone calldodger_sister on June 22nd, 2012 09:04 pm (UTC)
Mom is doing better now. She has a cast on and her main problem is that she is bored, what with only having one hand atm. She was complaining to The Nephew (who broke his arm awhile back, if you remember) and The Nephew tells her, "This is what you do, Grandma. You turn on the TV and then you lay down on the couch and you only pretend like you are watching the TV but then you take a nap. Okay?" Words of wisdom from a 6 year old. lol

The clinic still hasn't called my dad about getting in and I feel like the longer they wait, the less likely he is to do it. I get him not wanting to go in a hospital (I know how much that sucks) but this life, in pain and unable to even ride in a car without serious pain so he can't really go anywhere, is just no way to live.

Thanks, babe. Normally that would be a lot of stress to handle at once but a) it was interespersed with all those wonderful phone calls I got which really helped boost my mood and b) I was actually able to help this time. I usually feel like there is so little I can do to help but my sister gave me a list of phone calls to make for her while she was at the ER with my mom. And then the next day when my sister came home from work I was able to say to her, "Mom had to go back to the ER because of extreme swelling but I found someone to take her and someone to pick her up and she is home now and you don't have to do anything." Which is always nice to be able to take care of things like that for my sister.

Yay, Kevin! I have missed your Kevin posts. :)

lol Everyone misses my Kevin posts. I miss Kevin. Feels like we never get to talk anymore. Hopefully he will come to our 4th of July cookout.

The Nephew is such a smart little man! That is totally what she should do. :)

No, that sounds like no fun at all. :( I hope they get their butts into gear soon and call him.

Oh yeah, feeling helpless while everyone else struggles is horrible. I'm glad you had things you could do this time! And it must have felt great to be able to fix everything so your sister didn't have to take care of it.
